Disciplines in Teaching Careers: Opportunities in Teaching Careers Teaching is very vast field with lot of specifications. Different areas of specializations include teaching at nursery schools, primary schools, high schools, colleges, universities, institutes, private schools, special tuitions etc. However each specialized area needs different expertise with different skill sets. Following are the different disciplines in teaching careers: Nursery Schools or Pre-primary School: Teachers who are teaching in nursery school or pre primary school are responsible for teaching students' in their early age which form their vision and affect their future. In this way, teachers play an important role in the overall progress of students. In nursery or pre-primary school, teachers make students familiar with alphabets, numbers, language, science, as well as music, games and computers. Primary School and Secondary School: In primary school, teachers guide students and make their base perfect in the different subjects. Teachers have to teach a particular subject and thus they must have good knowledge about that subject. Colleges or Universities: Teachers in universities or colleges are lecturers and professors who are specialize in a particular subject. They are responsible for delivering lectures, guiding students in their educational, research work and as well as their career development. Special schools: Some schools are associated with students who are physically and/ or mentally handicapped or having learning disabilities. To work in such special school, one should be patient. Responsibilities of a Teacher: Duties of a Teacher In everyone's life, teachers have an important role to play in intellectual development as well as social development. Under the guidance of teacher, future prospect of students is decided. Teachers offer atmosphere and knowledge for the students to develop them into responsible citizen. As a facilitator or coach, teachers are not only responsible for teaching various subjects but they also have to plan lessons, evaluating students' performance and judging students' overall progress. Other responsibilities of a teacher include evaluation of papers, preparing score cards, and arranging parents and teachers meeting to discuss student's progress and overall improvement. Qualification or Eligibility for Teaching Careers: Most of the States offer professional development schools which are directed by universities and secondary schools. In this professional development schools, they prepared a program which include theory along with practical to give students some hand on experience in teaching. Students can take admission for this program after completing their bachelor's degree in any discipline. There are also traditional education programs for nursery and pre-primary school teachers. These courses include science, physical science, mathematics, social science, art, music, and literature along with professional education courses including philosophy of education, psychology of teaching and various methods of teaching. Job Prospects: In teaching careers, there are various job opportunities available. There is various school and colleges are opened recently which provides various job opportunities. However, no. of jobs available varies according to subjects taught and school or college location. More candidates are attracted towards teaching career because of improved job opportunities, good salary and increasing public interest. More number of students completing their post graduation and graduation are increasing. Also many States have implemented policies which encourage students to take teaching as their career. Job prospects in all teaching field including nursery, preprimary, secondary schools are projected to rise in coming years. Teachers specialized in mathematics, science as well as social science and multilingual education have bright job prospects. Remuneration in Teaching Field: In teaching careers, annual salary for nursery, pre-primary, primary and secondary teachers is in the range of $46,740 to $498,430. However, for entry level students it ranges between $29,880 and $34550 and for experienced teachers it is between $69,560 and $77,350. Entry level teachers with a bachelor's degree have average annual salary $31,753. According to the American Federation of Teachers, public elementary and secondary school teachers have $47,602 per annum average salary. However, it is possible for teachers to increase their income in various ways. Teachers involve in coaching sports and guiding students in extracurricular activities get extra pay. Also teachers can earn extra money by conducting summer coaching classes or doing other woks in school administration. In all States, it is required that all public school teachers must be licensed. Teachers are given grades through 1 to 12 and according to their grade they can teach at different level. Requirements for getting license vary by State.
